PhD Admissions: Beyond Prestige, Towards Competency-Based Selection (2026)

The Paradox of Physics PhD Admissions: Unlocking the Gates of Scientific Excellence

The world of physics is grappling with a paradox that demands our attention. While we champion creativity, rigour, and collaboration as the cornerstones of scientific excellence, the process of selecting future researchers remains mired in a web of institutional prestige and privilege.

The Problem with Traditional Admissions

Traditional admissions criteria, such as degree classification and university ranking, are like a comfortable blanket that we've grown accustomed to. However, these criteria are far from objective. They are deeply intertwined with unequal access to resources and opportunities, favoring those with prior privilege. It's a system that perpetuates exclusion, even as we strive for diversity and innovation.

Consider this: two students with equal potential can have vastly different CVs simply due to their socio-economic backgrounds. The current system often rewards those with access to elite institutions, insider knowledge, and financial security. This is not a fair playing field, and it undermines the very essence of scientific meritocracy.

A New Approach: DiveIn's Revolution

At the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Diversity-Led, Mission-Driven Research (DiveIn), we've embarked on a journey to disrupt this status quo. Our mission is to shift the focus from prior privilege to demonstrable competencies. Instead of selecting students based on their alignment with predefined projects, we recruit a diverse cohort and co-create projects tailored to their strengths.

The Equity in Doctoral Education through Partnership and Innovation (EDEPI) program has been instrumental in this transformation. By expanding the EDEPI framework, we emphasize interdisciplinary research, cohort development, and advocacy. Anonymization is key to our process, ensuring that applicants are judged solely on their competencies, not their backgrounds.

Unlocking Diversity and Excellence

DiveIn's approach has yielded promising results. Our first recruitment cycle has led to a diverse cohort, both in background and discipline. This isn't just about ticking diversity boxes; it's about fostering an environment where different perspectives thrive. By redefining the standards, we've widened participation without compromising on quality. In fact, we believe this approach can enhance the impact of PhD research.

Admissions as a Design Challenge

Admissions should be viewed as a design problem, a process that can be refined and improved. By treating it as such, we open doors to a more resilient and creative generation of researchers. As the technology sector struggles with diversity, this reform could be a game-changer for UK Tech. It's time to move beyond the confines of traditional admissions and embrace a more inclusive, competency-based approach.

Personally, I find this shift incredibly exciting. It challenges us to rethink our assumptions about what makes a great researcher. It's not just about academic prowess; it's about adaptability, communication, and ethical judgment. By building fairer systems, we can create a scientific community that truly reflects the diverse world we aim to understand and improve.
